Schools, clean air and active transport [OxFoE event] @ County Hall | England | United Kingdom

A growing number of schools across the county are active on environmental issues. High on the list for many is the issue of air pollution, with schools being near to roads with heavy traffic. Pollution is also made worse by many people driving children to school and causing congestion in nearby streets.

There’s some good work being done on these issues – many schools have run Walk to School programmes through the WOW initiative and the City Council has worked on anti-idling campaigns with six schools. It also seems that others are linking work on pollution and travel to their ‘eco-schools’ and ‘green group’ programmes.

Oxford Friends of the Earth have worked on these issues for some years and are now doing a survey of work by schools with the aim of setting up an ‘Oxfordshire Schools Clean Air Network’. The survey is online here: https://www.oxfoe.co.uk/oxford-friends-of-the-earth/air-quality/schools-clean-air-network/

This seminar will deliver an initial report based on the results of that survey to date and also uodate in current work. The agenda includes:

  • Initial survey results
  • Good practice examples
  • Updates on work by County Council and City Council
  • Lessons learn from work to date
  • Discussion on support that is needed and next steps
