Thanks to LCWO committee member Ruth (with input from newest volunteer Helen and other committee members) for pulling together this new letter to local supermarkets.

In the letter, we remind them of our earlier ‘How Green is your supermarket?’ event in 2015 and ask for an update on what they are doing to reduce carbon emissions and reduce environmental harm in the light of the recent IPCC report.

We ask for specific information regarding their policies on marketing meat, given the recommendation that we reduce our meat consumption and research which shows that placing of meat in shops affects buying habits; and for information on any plans to create packaging-free zones, as others have done in London.

The letter was posted or hand delivered to Aldi, the Co-op, Waitrose, Tesco in Botley and Sainsburys in the Westgate, as although beyond our ‘patch’ geographically, many local residents shop there.

If you would like to get involved in future supermarket campaigning, we have plans for 2019 and would love to hear from you.  We can add you to our ‘food/supermarket campaign volunteers list’, and update you when we have more concrete need for input so get in touch!

Seen our new ‘5 things we can all start doing right now?’ leaflet?  Changes to our food choices are the first thing on the list, and in January 2019, I’ll be trying Veganuary to see what habit changes I can make – so watch this space for updates.
